Reducing our CO2 emissions and energy consumption
Following the carbon balance carried out in 2008, Crédit Agricole is taking steps to limit its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Within the Group, we have introduced two important measures: consumption reporting and an ethical purchasing code . We are also maintaining our commitment to responsible waste disposal .
Environmental reporting: greater control over consumption
Environmental reporting means that we can track indicators like our energy and water consumption. In 2009, indicators were generated for Group entities in France and the Greek subsidiary Emporiki Bank. The scope of data collection will be extended year by year.
In a continuous improvement process, we regularly enhance the system by adding new indicators . This year we included:
- Electricity, gas and heating consumption,
- For the first time, the consumption of refrigeration networks and of fuel oil for heating (generator consumption was excluded).
Our aim: to cut our energy consumption by 15%.
The environmental codeof ethics: a responsible purchasing policy
Crédit Agricole started taking measures relating to purchasing and logistics in 2005. We have appointed a Sustainable Development Manager within the Purchasing Division and devised supplier risk ratings based on social and environmental responsibility (SER) principles.
We systematically include social and environmental criteria in our calls for tender , relating to matters such as human rights, ecodesign and lifecyle analysis. An SER reference framework for suppliers has also been created.
Ecodesign is central to our purchasing
We require our suppliers to provide environment-friendly products:
- Labelled gardening products
- Certified office supplies
- TCO or Energy Star rated hardware
Improved waste recycling
Crédit Agricole has embarked on an extensive waste recycling programme that includes:
- The collection of batteries and ink cartridges,
- Selective sorting in offices to encourage paper recycling,
- The processing of obsolete computers in partnership with the Emmaus charity.
Silca, the Group's IT management ? arm, has organised the recycling of computers since 2007. PCs still in working order are used by Emmaus for good causes and end-of-life machines are destroyed in compliance with environmental standards.
In 2009: 7,000 computers processed. Over 60% of CPUs and 40% of screens were reused through the Emmaus charity.
Switching to electronic documents to reduce paper consumption
Several Group entities have launched e-document schemes to reduce paper consumption both in-house and externally.
- Crédit Agricole Consumer Finance offers an electronic signature option for certain contracts,
- LCL is scanning commercial documentation and product brochures for business customers and has introduced an electronic signature option for savings products.
