Aid to developing countries: a long-term commitment

True to its values of mutualism and solidarity, Crédit Agricole contributes to international development aid in areas such as the fight against poverty and exclusion, support for agriculture and the agrifood sector, rural development, etc. Committed in the long term, Group entities support a large number of projects outside France.

Crédit Agricole Solidarité et Développement: to meet the needs of developing countries


The Group created Crédit Agricole Solidarité et Développement (CASD) in 1983 to encourage the initiatives of its regional banks. For many years, the association has contributed to rural development in southern hemisphere countries:

  • By supporting farming, craft activities and trade,
  • By meeting primary needs like access to water, healthcare and education.

Crédit Agricole Solidarité et Développement: funding in 2009

  • Saving and lending : €336,000 for 2 projects in 2009
  • Agriculture and rural development : €600,000 for 27 projects in 2009
  • Primary needs : €69,900 for 9 projects in 2009

€10.2m in all for 453 projects since 1983

FARM: supporting world agriculture and rural life

Mali FARM

The Fondation pour l’Agriculture et la Ruralité dans le Monde (Foundation for World Agriculture and Rural Life, FARM) was created in 2006 on the initiative of René Carron, then Chairman of Crédit Agricole S.A. Its mission is to increase food security by supporting agriculture and the agrifood sector in developing countries. The Foundation also acts as an operator for development projects.

  • Development initiatives in five countries in West Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Togo) and two in North Africa (Algeria, Morocco)
  • In West Africa: 7 professional organisations in the agricultural sector to increase food security and support over 1,700 small farmers
  • In North Africa: water management training for over 200 small farmers

Using microfinance to fight poverty

To go even further in our commitment to others, in 2008 we set up the Grameen Crédit Agricole Microfinance Foundation with the aim of helping to develop microfinance institutions.

By supporting microcredit organisations we help to give the poorest people access to financing, enabling them to grow their businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.

The Grameen Crédit Agricole Microfinance Foundation in figures:

  • 517 active borrowers
    • Of which 92% are women
    • Of which 45% are in sub-Saharan Africa
  • An initial endowment from Crédit Agricole of €50m

Disasters and humanitarian emergencies: rebuilding for the long term

Through Crédit Agricole Solidarité et Développement (CASD) and in cooperation with NGOs on the ground, Crédit Agricole helps the victims of natural disasters.

Crédit Agricole Solidarité et Développement helping disaster victims:

  • €2m for over 28 reconstruction in regions of South Asia devastated by the tsunami in 2006
  • €1m to finance reconstruction and economic recovery plans in Haiti in 2009
