Sustainable development and environmental considerations: Crédit Agricole S.A.'s commitments
Because of its strong regional presence, Crédit Agricole is keenly aware of environmental issues. Since 2002, the Group has been dedicated to an approach designed to foster responsible growth through biodiversity and environmental support programmes.
Climate change and environmental protection
In 2010, Crédit Agricole S.A. teamed up with WWF-France (World Wide Fund for Nature), one of the world's largest independent NGOs dedicated to the conservation of nature and environmental protection around the globe.
Within this partnership, Crédit Agricole's actions are concentrated primarily on three WWF programmes:
- climate change and development of sustainable housing;
- protecting oceans and coastlines;
- conserving and protecting forests.
With WWF's help, we are also committed to increasing our efforts to reduce the banking sector's direct and indirect impact on the environment and to develop socially responsible banking products.
The WWF in figures:
- 1961: creation of WWF, the world's leading environmental protection organisation in France and in the world
- Nearly 12,000 nature protection programmes in over 200 ecoregions
- 165,000 members and 12,000 volunteers within WWF-France in 2009

Protecting biodiversity
In 2006, Crédit Agricole became a partner of the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) and a supporter of its programme to assess biodiversity in 130 farms and to develop improvement plans.
Since 2009, Crédit Agricole, alongside the National Museum of Natural History, has also sponsored a research programme to count birds in France. This is the largest ornithological census in the past 20 years.
Crédit Agricole and LPO
- 1912: creation of LPO, which represents BirdLife International in France
- Over 14,000 LPO refuges created with Crédit Agricole's support
- 1,200 new refuges created each year
