According the conclusions of a study by ERP consultants, it costs about one Euro to process a cheque - 50 times more than an electronic transaction by transfer or card. Unlike the rest of Europe, where cheques have almost disappeared, in France just over one in 10 non-cash payments are by cheque. France therefore accounts for 84% of cheques issued in the Eurozone. Habit – and the fact that this payment method is free – accounts for this attachment. However, since 2015, the French government has undertaken a national payment strategy developing alternatives to cheques (contactless payment, person-to-person transfer, etc). The stakes are high, as the overall cost of cheques is close to €3 billion.
