US manufacturer Ford successfully launched the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair on 17 April 1964. 20,000 orders were placed on day one, making it the fastest-selling car in history. The competitively-price sports car, which came with a vast catalogue of options, had a huge impact on Detroit's automotive industry. The car was named after a famous World War II American fighter plane and the wild mustang horse known for its power, speed and independence. By March 1966, one million vehicles had been sold. 50 years later, this figure was 9 million. This legend of US automotive history has made over 3,200 appearances on TV and film. |
